From travel to field work
Twelve days on the Aegean, a month in the Amazon, and why exploration comes first.
From 22 July to 3 August 2018, Blue Green Expedition spent twelve full days aboard a sailing boat equipped for diving, among the small islands of the Aegean Sea.
The mission was part of a long-running environmental programme run with Planète Urgence. Its aim: build a consistent database on the health of small Mediterranean islands, so that protection strategies could be based on evidence.
The work
- Describing underwater landscapes with a thirty-question observation survey on variety and degradation.
- Collecting micro-plastics and surface data, depending on the sea and the wind.
It set the pattern for what followed. A month with the San Miguel del Bala community in the Bolivian Amazon had come the year before. Beach clean-ups with children in the Philippines and a talk on ocean protection at a school in Zanzibar came after.
Exploration is still where many Blue Green ideas begin. Algae was born on the road; Kairos on a retreat.
